Rural Chinese Food Consumption: The Case of Guangdong

Abstract: Chinese consumer behavior is analyzed based on rural Guangdong household survey data. For most food items, own-price elasticities estimated with an AIDS model are inelastic. Commodity substitution due to relative price changes is small, except in the case of grain. Commodities most responsive to expenditure changes are meats, poultry, fruits, sweets, and durable goods.

“…Sixthly, it aggregate perfectly across consumers without invoking parallel linear Engel curve, and finally, it has a functional form which is consistent with known household budget data. Halbrendt et al (1994) and Fan et al (1995) applied the AIDS model to analyze the household pattern in china. The two studies found that the lowest expenditure elasticities are found in grain.…”

“…Regional data sets from China's 1990 Rural Household Survey have been used in three recent studies (Halbrendt et al 1993;Gao et al 1993;Tan et al 1994). Halbrendt et al (1993) have estimated an AIDS of nine expenditure groups (durables, clothing and seven food commodities) using a data set of rural households from Guangdong province.…”
