“…Roasted meats were part of the "haute cuisine" of the Inka, and one would assume that the more roasted meats in relation to stewed meats consumed, the more cultural affinity toward the Inka there is (Jennings and Duke, 2018;Quave et al, 2019). Nevertheless, our analysis shows the importance of taking into account overall meat consumption.…”

“…The emphasis in this study is on overall QOL, but we will first explain the internal distinctions in prosperity at each site, via household wealth. Some material correlates of wealth commonly used in archaeological studies, such as the size of the domestic structure and species diversity of foodways, did not correspond with clear wealth differences at Cheqoq and Yanawilka (Hu, 2016;Quave, 2012;Quave et al, 2019). Intrasite differences in construction investment was not pronounced at both sites.…”

“…Especially relevant to this discussion, Covey explores the question of state emergence in relation to a scalar threshold-specifically, indices of political control beyond a one day round trip (pedestrian) travel and finds strong settlement pattern evidence for it between 1200 and 1300 CE [30] . It is around this time that a wholesale transformation of the regional landscape occurred with the establishment of royal estates in the traditional lands of former rival polities in the Vilcanota Valley, the proliferation of centrally-planned settlements with Inka temples and administrative architecture, and widespread agricultural intensification in the region [26,30,[33][34][35][36][37] . Notably, indices for major innovations in information systems-for example, the development of a judicial system, the state calendrical system, decimal administration, and inter-regional road systems-appear to emerge only with the reign of Pachakutiq Inka Yupanki, who was the architect of the first major expansionist campaigns of the mid-15th century CE, which quickly engulfed the Lake Titicaca Basin and altiplano to the south, as well as the entirety of the central and northern highlands to central Ecuador and north coastal regions, including the Chimu empire [17,23,30] .…”

“…Although it is likely that most people throughout the Inka realm were familiar with camelid meat, the ordinary was made exceptional through the use of earthen ovens that probably added a different flavor, thus making the occasion memorable. Moreover, instead of cooking food in several ceramic vessels, the most efficient way of preparing food for large crowds was in the pachamanka style: its use in Inka times has been suggested by other researchers after finding some partially burned bones (Costin and Earle 1989;Quave et al 2019;Sanderfur 2001). The presence of earthen ovens at Tambo Viejo confirms these suggestions, demonstrating that, as in more recent times, pachamanka was the special-occasion food for the Inka.…”
