Rural settlement spatial patterns and effects: Road traffic accessibility and geographic factors in Guangdong Province, China

Abstract: Based on land use classification data of remote sensing images, using kernel density, the minimal cumulative resistance model of road traffic accessibility, and a logistic regression model, the characteristics of the spatial pattern and the main factors influencing it were quantitatively examined in Guangdong Province from 1990 to 2013. The framework of the research concerning rural settlement evolution and its effect mechanisms were also discussed and generalized for the future. The results are as follows: (1… Show more

“…Existing studies explored the spatiotemporal changes and driving forces of rural settlements. Changes in the natural environment (Zhou et al, 2013), urbanization (Irwin and Bockstael, 2002;Tan and Li, 2013), housing construction (Bański and Wesołowska, 2010;Peng et al, 2013), social transformation (Kiss, 2000), and road traffic accessibility (Yang et al, 2019) have all been identified as the driving forces of rural settlement evolution. The scholars have tried to reveal the relationships between rural settlement change and variation of population size.…”

“…Location conditions are one of the main influencing factors of rural development model selection and economic activity layout. There is a strong positive correlation between comprehensive location conditions and rural development strength [71]. The distance between the county and the city center represents the urban-rural relationship and the rural economic location advantage.…”

“…Elevation, slope, climate suitability, and oasis area were selected as the four indicators of rural environmental conditions. The natural geographical environment, especially the topographical conditions, forms the basis for rural production and rural development [71]. We used elevation and slope indicators to characterize the topographical features.…”

“…The increasing spatial connection of historical towns can be realized by design of public facilities and activity places, which are helpful to the SSNS and conservation of the built environment (43,44). To plan these infrastructures properly, it is necessary to classify the conservation area of the historical town into different conservation grades.…”
