S100A12 is a promising biomarker in papillary thyroid cancer

Abstract: S100A12 belongs to the S100 family and acts as a vital regulator in different types of tumors. However, the function of S100A12 in thyroid carcinoma has not yet been investigated. In this study, we analyzed the expression of S100A12 in human papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) samples and two PTC cell lines. In addition, we explored the effects of S100A12 on PTC cell progression in vitro and in vivo. Our results showed that S100A12 was significantly upregulated in PTC specimens. Moreover, silencing S100A12 markedly… Show more

“…S100A12 belongs to calciumbinding S100 group proteins, which was necessary in cancer development. S100A12 was related to the proliferation and invasion of human papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), and may be an effective target for PTC treatment [34]. Meanwhile, S100A12 can be important diagnostic biomarker in breast cancer [35].…”

“…S100A12 is an important protein for evaluating the activity of several inflammatory diseases. This protein is distinctively increased in diseases such as systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis and FMF, although it is also elevated in infection, malignancy, and some collagen diseases [9][10][11][12][13][14]16,17]. In a study of 56 children and adolescents with FMF, S100A12 levels had better indicative power than CRP level, ESR, and SAA level.…”

“…The activation of this receptor induces the proinflammatory response via nuclear factor-kappa B in leukocytes and endothelial cells, and this protein is reportedly a marker for granulocyte activation that is more useful than CRP and ESR for detecting inflammatory activity. The amount of S100A12 protein is also known to increase in cases of malignancies, obstructive sleep apnea, autoimmune diseases, systemic lupus erythematosus, juvenile arthritis, and FMF [10][11][12][13][14].…”

“…S100A12 is commonly expressed on neutrophils monocytes and macrophages, the plasma levels of S100A12 are systemic biomarkers for many inflammatory diseases ( Meijer et al, 2012 ). S100A12 is dysregulated in many types of cancers, upregulated in colorectal cancer and papillary thyroid cancer but reduced in gastric carcinoma and oropharyngeal squamous cells ( Thierolf et al, 2008 ; Funk et al, 2015 ; Li et al, 2016 ; Wang et al, 2020 ). Studies on S100A12 in HCC are limited.…”
