Safety Indices during Fetal Echocardiography at the Time of First-Trimester Scan Are Machine Dependent

Abstract: The aim of our study was to evaluate the thermal index (TI) and mechanical index (MI), during the assessment of the fetal heart at the time of first-trimester scan, with different ultrasound machines. This was part of an observational study conducted in patients undergoing routine first-trimester screening. Cases were examined with Voluson E8 or 730Pro scanners using 2–8 MHz transabdominal probes. TI and MI were retrieved from the saved displays while in gray mode, color flow mapping and pulsed-wave (PW) Doppl… Show more

“…The finding was low in comparison to the WHO standard which states every pregnant woman should have a birth plan [ 16 ]. However, it’s relatively higher than findings of studies conducted in some parts of Ethiopia- (Sidama Zone (17%) [ 10 ], Arsi Zone (16.5%) [ 11 ], and Wolita Zone (18.3%) [ 17 ]). But the result was nearly similar with that of South Wollo (24.1%) [ 18 ], Adigrat of Tigray Region (22%) [ 9 ], Basoliben in Amhara Region (26.9%) [ 19 ].…”

“…Since recent studies showed that early pregnancy ultrasound evaluation is not dangerous to the embryo, there is no contraindication to perform early and first trimester ultrasound [3,4] as well as later in life [17]. Although it is expected that the majority of pregnant women had a first trimester ultrasound in our study only around 30% of them underwent this kind of examination.…”

“…The advantage of an integrated approach is that second trimester ultrasound evaluation allows the gathering of more fetal anatomical details compared to the first trimester ultrasound and these details could adjust the calculated risk [2]. Development of technology and of ultrasound machines in the last decade has reduced this gap and gives nowadays the possibility for an earlier fetal ultrasound evaluation [3,4]. The aim of the integrated screening test is to obtain fetal nuchal translucency (NT) and crown-rump length (CRL) values in the first trimester and to collect maternal serum in the second trimester.…”

“…It is difficult to compare our results to previous publications since in previous studies the evaluation of operator adherence to safety recommendations in routine practice relied on saved still images [26,27] and short cine-loops [28]. One study used entire tape-recorder scans.…”
