The burgeoning manufacturing sector has been the primary driver of Malaysia's substantial and notable economic expansion. Notwithstanding these, the Malaysian manufacturing sector remains afflicted by concerning safety concerns. To enhance the situation, the Malaysian government has proposed the use of self-regulatory safety management systems (SMS). However, there are doubts about the employees' preparedness to adopt this measure. Implementing SMS has numerous complexities. Despite progress made in the SMS technique, failures continue to be prevalent. There is a lack of literature regarding the perspectives of the manufacturing industry regarding their concerns regarding the implementation of SMS. This study aimed to ascertain the presence of safety practices derived from SMS elements and identify the characteristics associated with the successful application of SMS. The anticipation is that the outcomes of this study will contribute to the successful implementation of SMS. The findings of this research will be of significant importance to the stakeholders and policymakers.

Driving heavy vehicles with dangerous cargo involves various work environments that can significantly impact road safety. This research aims to study the impact of oil and gas tanker drivers’ work environment on driving performance to identify and address any issues that may affect their ability to carry out their jobs effectively. To achieve this, a quantitative approach was employed using a questionnaire survey adapted from the literature review. The data collected from a sample of drivers of oil- and gas-heavy vehicles were analyzed using structural equation modelling. The study’s findings reveal a significant association between the drivers’ work environment and driving performance, represented by a path coefficient of β = 0.237. These results highlight the substantial contribution of the work environment to driving performance, with an effect of 63%. Consequently, the study emphasizes the importance of considering the work environment as a potential factor when assessing and enhancing tanker drivers’ driving abilities during oil and gas transportation.

The main purpose of this research was to investigate the mediating role of safety communication (SCO) in the relationship between safety culture (SC) and safety performance (SP) amongst employees in the petrochemical industry. Safety communication methods not only enhance working conditions but also have a positive impact on employee's behaviors and attitudes toward safety leading toward reduced incidents in the workplace environment. A stratified sampling method was followed to collect data in the petrochemical industry in Malaysia. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was utilized to analyze the hypothesized model, using data from 320 participants. The findings reveal that safety communication partially mediates the association between safety culture and safety performance. Further, safety culture was found to have a significant and positive effect on safety performance. This -study makes a significant theoretical contribution by providing empirical evidence on the direct and indirect relationship between safety culture and safety performance in the petrochemical industry.
