Safety of non‐ablative fractional laser for acne scars within 1 month after treatment with oral isotretinoin: A randomized split‐face controlled trial

Abstract: NAFL treatment for acne scarring appears to be well tolerated within 1 month of completing isotretinoin treatment. Dermatologists should reevaluate the current recommendation to wait 6 months after isotretinoin treatment for acne scar revision with lasers. Other larger studies are necessary to further challenge this dogma. Lasers Surg. Med. 49:886-890, 2017. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

“…In this study, we prescribed low dose of isotretinoin with short-term interval, and all mild cutaneous symptoms were relieved soon. In addition, recent reports demonstrated safety of device-based treatments during intake of isotretinoin, 18,19 as confirmed in our study. It is intriguing to speculate the minimally required dosage of isotretinoin to improve PPR.…”

“…Two of the five events were transient (≤7 days), and only one persisted for 2 months. Mean treatment‐associated facial pain was tolerable across the treatment sessions in our study, with mean per‐session scores ≤4.4, similar to those reported by other patient cohorts treated with NAFL .…”

“…This improvement was sustained over the ensuing 8 weeks, while no change from baseline in skin redness and pigmentation was noted . In a similar trial with a 1,550‐nm laser, all 10 patients displayed some level of improvement in acne scarring at a 6‐month follow‐up visit . When implementing a six‐session 1,440‐nm NAFL regimen to improve skin appearance in 20 patients, Saedi et al noted a mean overall improvement score of 2.75 ± 0.2 measured on a 4‐point scale.…”

“…Blistering, crusting, or postinflammatory hyperpigmentation were not observed in any case. 26 In line with these results, a combination of infrared fractional 1550 nm erbium-doped fiber laser with lowdose isotretinoin was superior to laser treatment alone in 35 patients with acne scars. All of them received the same dosage of 10 mg isotretinoin per day.…”
