Salivary flow, saliva, pH and buffering capacity in 70‐year‐old men and women

Abstract: A representative systematic selection of 30% of all 70-year-olds (1148 persons) in Göteborg were invited to a population study. The participation rate was 85%. Sixteen per cent of the men and 25% of the women reported dryness in the mouth (sex. diff. P less than 0.01). There was a significant correlation between the number of drugs consumed by the subjects and subjective dryness (in both sexes P less than 0.001). Intake of drugs from the groups of anticholionergics, antihistamines, sedatives, hypnotics or phen… Show more

“…The salivary flow rates appeared low and the incidence of xeros tomia high when compared to other elderly groups [Rask et al, 1991;Hunt et al, 1992], The correlation between the prevalence of dry mouth and xerostomic medications is supported by other studies [Osterberg et al, 1984;Handelnian et al, 1989], Subjects in this study were able to relate low stimulated salivary flow rates to subjective perception of a dry mouth, which contrasts with other studies [Srccbny and Broich, 1988;Narhi, 1994],…”

“…Salivary gland hypofunction resulting from systemic disease, radiation therapy or use of specific medications significantly increases the risk of developing caries and oth er diseases of the oral cavity [Osterberg et al, 1984;Mandel, 1989;Lucas, 1993]. The secondary effects of certain drugs that are frequently prescribed in an adult population are among the most common causes of xerostomia [Winer and Bahn, 1967;Bertram et al, 1979;Rundegren et al, 1985;Handelman et al, 1986] due to their anticholinergic effects.…”
