Sampling Development

Abstract: Research in developmental psychology requires sampling at different time points. Accurate depictions of developmental change provide a foundation for further empirical studies and theories about developmental mechanisms. However, overreliance on widely spaced sampling intervals in cross-sectional and longitudinal designs threatens the validity of the enterprise. This article discusses how to sample development in order to accurately discern the shape of developmental change. The ideal solution is daunting: to … Show more

“…Visual inspection of Figure 3 does not show individual infant trajectories converging closer to a composite score of 100 over time. These findings fit with our knowledge that development is a complex, non-linear process 25 26 , and support the theory that optimal variability (not too much and not too little) is a defining characteristic of a healthy neuromotor system 20 24 .…”

“…Studies of infant leg movements tend to quantify infants’ behavior from seconds [ 1 ] to minutes [ 2 , 3 ], up to an hour or two [ 4 6 ]. Despite the great knowledge gathered from these studies, it has recently been argued that to further advance the field, we must use new technologies to sample development for a minimum of 24 h per sample in order to overcome the effects of circadian rhythms, behavioral context, environmental stimuli, mood and motivation, among others [ 7 ]. Newer technologies, namely accelerometers, allow for longer-term data collection and analysis of infants behavior over 24 or even 48 continuous hours [ 8 10 ].…”

“…Another explanation is that the 5–8 min of movement observed in these studies [ 13 , 17 ] is not sufficient to accurately capture the relationships of interest. Infant behavior is highly variable and affected by context, thus a snapshot of behavior may not reflect the true relationship [ 18 ]. Currently, there is no benchmark for the daily quantity of leg movements generated by typically-developing infants.…”
