Sampling Methods Used in Developed Countries for Behavioural Surveillance Among Men who have Sex with Men

Abstract: The aim of this review was to develop an overview of the sampling methods used in developed countries for behavioural surveillance among men who have sex with men. We abstracted information from peer-reviewed and non-peer-reviewed publications and, when needed, contacted first authors and surveillance authorities. Out of the 40 developed countries, 26 surveillance systems were identified in 23 countries. These surveillance systems made use of one or a combination of: venue-based sampling (n = 16); web-based sa… Show more

“…Our findings support the use of regularly conducted, comprehensive, location-based, behavioural surveillance among MSM to monitor trends in prevention uptake, inform control strategies and interpret HIV epidemiological data 28 29. These systems can also inform control strategies for other sexually transmitted infections among MSM, which are emerging as substantial public health problems.…”

“…Likewise, service-based sampling methods (i.e., recruitment from drug treatment centres or needle and syringe programs) have been criticised for not being able to reach those who are not frequent attendees of such services [1,48]. For this reason, many behavioural surveillance systems have made use of several surveys incorporating different sampling methods in order to gain a more comprehensive picture of the target population [49,50]. This study suggests that RDS is no different from other sampling methods, and in order to recruit a broad cross-section of the population, it may be useful to supplement RDS with studies using sampling methods that capture participants that compliment those recruited through RDS.…”
