Sampling strategies for assessing lameness, injuries, and body condition score on dairy farms

Abstract: Our objective was to evaluate how sampling strategies (i.e., how many cows to sample and which animals to include) used in 4 dairy cattle welfare assessment programs affect the classification of dairy farms relative to thresholds of acceptability for animal-based measures. We predicted that classification performance would improve when more cows were sampled and when selecting from all lactating cows versus when some pens were excluded. On 38 freestall farms, we assessed all 12,375 cows for lameness, injuries … Show more

“…There were two types of buffalo breeds available in this farm, the Swamp and the Murrah × Swamp crossbred, representing 54% and 46% of the total buffalo population, respectively. The sample size in this study was represented by 10% to 15% of the total buffaloes in the farm, according to the Cochran method [13,14]. The sample size reflected proportions of the population in the farm, with the buffaloes selected randomly.…”

“…In our study, changes in salivary analytes in cows with lameness were evaluated. The lameness severity showed a scoring mean of 3, considered as moderate [20]. This degree of severity represents more the usual situation on the farms of our area where more severe lameness are not so frequent.…”
