SANDRA: a portable XRF system for the study of Mexican cultural heritage

Abstract: Destructive Analysis using X-rays) developed at the Physics Institute of the UNAM, Mexico, for the study of Mexican cultural heritage collections. The X-ray fluorescence (XRF) SANDRA device can use 75 W Mo, Rh and W X-ray tubes and Amptek Si-PIN and Cd-Te detectors that are selected and combined depending on the elemental range detection requirements and the specific problem to be studied. In this paper, a full description and characterization of this system, sensitivities for the X-ray tubes and detectors as … Show more

“…Portable equipment for the elemental XRF study was the non-destructive X-ray analysis system (SANDRA) developed by our group [21]. It is composed of a Mo X-Ray tube with a Be window, a X-123 Si-PIN detector from Amptek and a collimator of 1.5-mm diameter.…”

“…After the global examination by the imaging techniques, the inks and paper of the document were analyzed using our portable XRF SANDRA device [13] with a 75W Mo Xray tube and a Si-PIN X123 detector from Amptek ( Figure 3). XRF conditions for the Xray tube were 40 kV and 0.6 mA, these measurements lasted 180 seconds per region.…”

“…In the region 36 corresponding to the signature of Espinosa de los Monteros (second one in the middle area of the document), the ink is the most different of all the inks. Then, the signature of Iturbide (11), the note "Lugar de la firma de J. O'Donoju" (13) and the signature of the Puebla's Bishop (26) also present different composition. This compositional profile may give rise to a proposal about how the writing of the document was: First, the date and the declaration were written by the secretary and then signed by Iturbide with a different ink, as well as the Bishop of Puebla using a third ink.…”
