Sarcopenia in the elderly: Basic and clinical issues

Abstract: The original definition of sarcopenia refers to the age-related loss of muscle mass. The literature suggests that the prevalence of sarcopenia in 60- to 70-year-olds is in the range of 5-13%. Prevalence estimates increase to 11-50% for the population aged 80 years or older. Estimates by the World Health Organization suggest that there were 600 million people aged 60 years or older in the year 2000, and that this number will increase to 1.2 billion by the year 2025. There are, however, limited published data on… Show more

“…Regarding comparison of baseline characteristics between the PMI-H and PMI-L groups, ECOG-PS and BMI were identified to be significant factors. DSMM is associated with disability, functional decline, poorer nutritional status and frailty, which may lead to poorer PS and lower BMI (13,14). However, aging was not identified to be a significant factor in the present study.…”

“…Sarcopenia, defined as decreased skeletal muscle mass (DSMM) and muscle strength, has become a relevant clinical feature for understanding the effects of aging on clinical outcomes (13). Sarcopenia is a commonly observed disorder in aged populations and is associated with disability, functional decline and frailty (13,14). Age-associated sarcopenia is defined as primary sarcopenia, whilst advanced malignancies, as well as chronic inflammatory diseases including renal, heart and liver diseases, can be the causes of secondary sarcopenia (12)(13)(14)(15)(16).…”

“…[1] Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder which adversely affects the quality of life and life expectancy of elderly population. [2] According to the data from the World Health Organization (WHO), 2.1% of the world's population is diabetic, and the incidence and prevalence have been on the rise with advanced age.…”

“…By contrast, sarcopenia has become a relevant clinical feature for understanding the effects of aging on clinical outcomes (19). Sarcopenia is a commonly observed disorder in aged populations and is associated with disability, functional decline and frailty (19,20). Generally, skeletal muscle mass is regulated depending on the balance between protein synthesis and protein breakdown (21).…”
