SARS-CoV-2 airborne transmission: a validated sampling and analytical method

Abstract: The most recent scientific studies have finally identified the airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2 as significant. Therefore, the airborne transmission path for SARS-CoV-2 is of primary scientific and health-related interest as it could actually involve management, accessibility, use and functionality of many activities, including hospitals (where COVID wards represent only a part of the critical issues), schools, workplaces, offices, factories, means of transport, sports venues, and the outdoor environment. I… Show more

“…The airborne particles attach to any surface in contact due to adhesive forces as van der Waals, electrostatic or surface tension. Thus, the air sampling methodologies depend on various parameters as aerodynamic diameter or adhesion of airborne particles (Robotto et al, 2021;Verreault et al, 2008). The aerodynamic diameters in the order 0.1-100 µm allow bioaerosols to move in a particular way called Brownian motion (< 0.1 µm) influenced by gravitational attraction (> 0.1 µm).…”

“…The "New Coronavirus Pneumonia Diagnosis and Treatment Plan (Trial Version 7)" pointed out that the main route of SARS-CoV-2 transmission includes respiratory droplet transmission and close contracting transmission ( General Office of the National Health Commission, 2020 ; Jin et al, 2021 ). Significantly, there are many studies that provide strong evidence for airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2 ( Robotto et al, 2021 ; Noorimotlagh et al, 2021 ; Stern et al, 2021 ; Baboli et al, 2021 ; Allen & Marr, 2020 ; Morawska et al, 2020 ). The transmission of virus-carrying droplets in the public bus is a dynamic process, and the suspension, deposition and escape of droplets are unsteady, leading to a change in the infection risk for passengers over time.…”
