SARS-CoV-2 Seroprevalence Post-First Wave among Primary Care Physicians in Catania (Italy)

Abstract: Family physicians or pediatricians and general practitioners (GPs) work in non-hospital settings. GPs usually visit many patients, frequently at their homes, with low potential, if any, to control the work setting. Particularly during the initial phases of the COVID-19 outbreak, they were not informed about the occurrence of SARS-CoV-2-infected patients, with inadequate information regarding the risk, a lack of suitable protective measures and, in some cases, deficient or poor accessibility to personal protect… Show more

“…It is unclear whether this was due to an attenuation of viral pathogenicity, to environmental factors or to population characteristics. Whilst the reported low number of deaths due to COVID-19 in our region cannot cause a reduction in the number of subjects with the “unfavorable” genotype, a further unfavorable evolution of the pandemics would possibly cause a reduction in the number of subjects carrying it ( Ledda et al, 2021 ).…”

“…Many seroprevalence studies on SARS-CoV-2 have been conducted. At first, they were carried out to estimate the prevalence among HCP [59][60][61][62]. After vaccination, several studies were carried out in order to provide indications on the presence of antibodies after vaccination and the dosages were repeated over time [63][64][65][66][67].…”

“…in comparison to pulmonologists), they do bear the brunt of an epidemic from frequent contacts with patients in less secure circumstances (8). Therefore, preserving the capacity of GPs and their co-workers throughout the COVID-19 epidemic is essential (9). This is particularly the case in Belgium where the PHCPs workforce consists of older adults (mean age = 55) who are at higher risk for COVID-19 morbidity and mortality (10).…”
