“…Furthermore, the present studies yielded the first empirical support that conspiratorial articles provide explanations that are more dispositional than non‐conspiratorial articles. Even though attributing the course of events to the intentional behaviour of conspirators, by definition, is a core element of conspiracy theories (Czech, 2019; Goertzel, 2010; Samory & Mitra, 2018), this is not a trivial finding because the respective non‐conspiratorial explanations often contain a dispositional account themselves (Dentith, 2016; Sunstein & Vermeule, 2009). In fact, in the sample of events we drew for the present research, there are many examples where the mainstream non‐conspiratorial explanation already includes the intentional behaviour of certain actors (e.g., the assassination of Osama Bin Laden, the Sandy Hook school shooting, the 2001 anthrax attacks) and the respective conspiratorial explanations merely propose another course of events or other actors behind the events.…”
