Sawtooth grating-assisted phase-matching

Abstract: We show that a sawtooth phase-modulation is the optimal profile for grating assisted phase matching (GAPM). Perfect (sharp) sawtooth modulation fully corrects the phase-mismatch, exhibiting conversion equal to conventional phase matching, while smoothened, approximate sawtooth structures are more efficient than sinusoidal or square GAPM modulations that were previously studied. As an example, we demonstrate numerically optically-induced sawtooth GAPM for high harmonic generation. Sawtooth GAPM is the most effi… Show more

“…There are currently several typical QPM techniques relying either on periodic modulation of the generating field strength: propagation in diameter-modulated capillaries [5]; HHG assisted by a periodic static electric field (or other periodic waveform e.g. sawtooth) [6,7]; QPM induced using two counterpropagating pulses [8,9]; QPM through multi-mode excitation in a waveguide [10]. An alternative QPM arrangement relies on periodic off-switching of generation in a multi-jet configuration [11,12].…”

“…In theory, perfect elimination of the PMM can be obtained, if a sawtooth-shaped field is applied as proposed in [44]. Therefore, this in not a traditional QPM method, we mention it due to the fact that it also uses an assisting field and, in theory, this can achieve 100% efficiency.…”

“…The ELI-ALPS pan-European research infrastructure is also based on HHG sources [4], demonstrating that the increasing research efforts dedicated to this field are fully justified. Given the advantages of exploring HHG in the emerging field of Attosecond Science and Technology, considerable research effort is being dedicated to find ways for increasing high-harmonic efficiency by implementing either tight [5] or loose focusing configurations [4,6], inventing different quasi-phase-matching techniques [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14], multi-color and/or multi-jet configurations [12,[15][16][17], but also to extend the available photon energy to reach the water-window [17][18][19] region.…”
