The results of two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of the dynamics and stability of azimuthal non-uniformities in converging shock waves generated by an underwater explosion of a cylindrical wire array and their effect on the cumulation of energy in the vicinity of the converging axis are presented. It has been shown that in spite of the fact that such non-uniformities are always weakly unstable, for a broad range of experimentally relevant regimes these non-uniformities remain small and do not significantly affect the cumulation of energy. Only the non-uniformities with wavelengths comparable to the distance from the axis of convergence exhibit substantial growth that considerably attenuates the energy cumulation. V
We present an optical mode solver for a whispering gallery resonator coupled to an adjacent arbitrary shaped nano-particle that breaks the axial symmetry of the resonator. Such a hybrid resonator-nanoparticle is similar to what was recently used for bio-detection and for field enhancement. We demonstrate our solver by parametrically studying a toroid-nanoplasmonic device and get the optimal nano-plasmonic size for maximal enhancement. We investigate cases near a plasmonic resonance as well as far from a plasmonic resonance. Unlike common plasmons that typically benefit from working near their resonance, here working far from plasmonic resonance provides comparable performance. This is because the plasmonic resonance enhancement is accompanied by cavity quality degradation through plasmonic absorption.
A study of generation of converging strong shock wave using microsecond underwater electrical explosion of spherical Cu-wire array is presented. Hydrodynamic simulations coupled with the equation of state for Cu and water, deposited energy, and the magnetic pressure were used to calculate the water parameters in the vicinity of the implosion origin. The results of simulations agree with the shock wave time-of-flight and energy delivered to the water flow and show that in the vicinity (diameter of $12 lm) of an implosion one can expect water pressure of $6 TPa, temperature of $17 eV, and compression of $8. We show that a sawtooth phase-modulation is the optimal profile for grating assisted phase matching (GAPM). Perfect (sharp) sawtooth modulation fully corrects the phase-mismatch, exhibiting conversion equal to conventional phase matching, while smoothened, approximate sawtooth structures are more efficient than sinusoidal or square GAPM modulations that were previously studied. As an example, we demonstrate numerically optically-induced sawtooth GAPM for high harmonic generation. Sawtooth GAPM is the most efficient method for increasing the conversion efficiency of high harmonic generation through quasi-phase-matching, with an ultimate efficiency that closely matches the ideal phase-matching case.
