Scalable Nanomanufacturing of Virus‐templated Coatings for Enhanced Boiling

Abstract: Biotemplated nanostructures for enhanced boiling are demonstrated using the scalable nanomanufacturing of high‐surface‐area virus‐structured coatings on copper, aluminum, stainless steel, and silicon surfaces. Superhydrophilic coatings based on self‐assembly of the Tobacco mosaic virus are cheap and scalable to real‐world applications, and are shown here to enhance critical heat flux and heat transfer coefficient by up to 200%.

“…Nickel plated TMV1cys gold, copper, aluminum and stainless steel surfaces show increased heat transfer coefficients up to 200% while showing no physical degradation of the PVN coated surface after a 24 h boiling exposure (Rahman et al, 2014). Heat transfer represents an important aspect in many industrial applications such as water purification and energy generation.…”

“…Our analysis of enhanced droplet spreading on nanostructured surfaces also connects to the heat transfer issues associated with pool boiling CHF conditions. In a recent experimental study, Rahman et al [6] presented results indicating that enhancement of pool boiling CHF on heated micro-and nanoporous surfaces correlates with the magnitude of a wickability parameter. The study done by Rahman et al [6] relates wickability to a volume flux, _ V 00 0 , which is experimentally determined in their study wherein they initiated deposition of water onto a hydrophilic microstructured surface from a tube by raising a surface until it contacted a pendent liquid at the bottom of the tube.…”

“…Video recordings of these experiments were analyzed to measure the volume rate, ðdV=dtÞ 0 , at which liquid spreads over the surface per unit area at the beginning of the process. Rahman et al [6] define their wickability metric as the volume flux per unit area…”
