Scanning and transmission electron microscopy of cysts in the renal cortex of the macaque monkey.

Abstract: Summary.Renal cysts in the cortex of the monkey kidney were observed by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, in an attempt to determine the three-dimensional structures of the epithelial cells in these cysts. The cysts were composed of a thin wall which limited a large spherical space containing a jelly-like substance and some wandering cells. Rudimentary tufts of glomerular capillaries and/or a mound-like swelling were present on the inner surface of the cyst wall, and the inner surface of the cysts … Show more

“…These findings argue against the notion that blocked filtration and subsequently raised intraglomerular pressures mediate dilation of atubular glomeruli into cysts. 24 Rather, the presence of parietal podocytes on Bowman's capsule appears to be a critical prerequisite for glomerular cyst formation.…”

“…22,23 Glomerular cysts lined by parietal podocytes have also been described in different cystic diseases in animals. 7,11,12,24 In previous studies, it was proposed that parietal epithelial cells (PECs) may differentiate into podocytes acting as a potential intrinsic progenitor cell population. 25,26 Parietal podocytes provide a unique and exceptional situation to investigate whether PECs have the potential to transdifferentiate into podocytes in situ on Bowman's capsule.…”

“…Reports of ultrastructural examination of animals [25] and human cases of GCKD are scarce and usually brief [5,6,26,27]. Ultrastructural findings of dexamethasone-induced experimental GCKD in rabbits have also been reported [28].…”
