Scenarios of sustainable irrigation expansion in the 21st century

Abstract: Irrigation expansion onto rainfed croplands is an important part of the portfolio of agricultural measures, contributing to a more resilient crop production while enhancing agricultural yields. Existing global assessments of irrigation illustrate the biophysical potential, but generally do not account for socioeconomic and environmental constraints to irrigation deployment. Here we provide scenarios of regionalized sustainable irrigation expansion linked to socioeconomic projections from the Shared Socioeconom… Show more

“…The presence of water, food, and energy crises, both at the global and regional levels, as well as their deterioration under conditions of climate change, increase the strategic importance of irrigation as the guarantor of sustainable development of the agricultural sector of the country's economy [KOVALENKO et al 2019;MARTYN et al 2020;OPENKO et al 2022;SHEVCHENKO et al 2017;VALIPOUR 2017; VAN MAANEN et al 2021].…”

“…Nevertheless, these results help assess the future climate consequences of irrigation expansion. Irrigation has been projected to increase in the future as a means to increase agricultural productivity(van Maanen et al, 2021;Rosa et al, 2020) but it may also aggravate future water stress (Haddelandhttps://doi.org/10.5194/esd-2022-5 Preprint.
