Schadenfreude is higher in real-life situations compared to hypothetical scenarios

Abstract: Schadenfreude (i.e., the pleasure derived from another’s misfortune) has been widely studied by having participants imagine how they would feel in hypothetical scenarios describing another person’s pain or misfortune. However, research on affective forecasting shows that self-judgments of emotions are inaccurate in hypothetical situations. Here we show a study in which we first presented a hypothetical schadenfreude situation and few months later, due to an exceptional circumstance, the situation turned out to… Show more

“…Although schadenfreude has been applied to various contexts, only recently have studies shown that a brand rivalry can elicit the same emotions as people feel at the personal level (Phillips‐Melancon & Dalakas, 2014). Recent research has demonstrated that the intergroup emotion of schadenfreude differs in magnitude for hypothetical and real‐life scenarios (Gonzalez‐Gadea et al, ). Employing construal level theory, Gonzalez‐Gadea et al () argue that people experience hypothetical scenarios as psychological distant, which in turn might lead to an underestimation of the felt experience.…”

Employing construal level theory, Gonzalez‐Gadea et al () argue that people experience hypothetical scenarios as psychological distant, which in turn might lead to an underestimation of the felt experience. As all studies are hypothetical in nature, the feelings of schadenfreude should be even stronger in real‐life settings.…”

“…In addition, some demographic characteristics of patients that may affect patient satisfaction scores, such as educational level and socioeconomic status, were not collected. Lastly, this study investigated the effect of dermatologist gender on patient satisfaction based only on hypothetical scenarios, which do not always faithfully elicit subconscious biases that may be revealed in a real-world setting ( FeldmanHall et al, 2012 , Gonzalez-Gadea et al, 2018 ).…”

“…Most of these studies used hypothetical scenarios and preselected the misfortunes that would likely elicit schadenfreude in their participants. As such, it remains unclear which misfortunes are most likely to galvanize schadenfreude in naturally occurring situations (see Gonzalez-Gadea, Ibanez, & Sigman, 2018). To fill this research gap, we aimed to examine the most common types of misfortunes that elicit schadenfreude in adolescents' real-life experiences.…”
