Scheimpflug Camera Measurement of Optical Density of the Corneal Epithelium, Stroma, and Endothelium in Patients with Pseudoexfoliation Syndrome

Abstract: BackgroundThe present study evaluated the optical density of particular layers of the cornea and anterior lens capsule in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX).Material/MethodsSixty patients with cataract and PEX (mean age 76.6±5.6 years, range 62–88 years) were compared to 55 controls with cataract without PEX syndrome (mean age 76.3±6.09 years, range 62–90 years; P>0.05). The anterior segment of one eye was examined in each patient using Pentacam HR by Oculus before the planned cataract surgery.Resu… Show more

“…8 Both studies highlight that this relationship could be an objective way to measure how corneal alterations can affect BCVA independently of other causes (glaucoma optic neuropathy, cataract, vitreo-retinal changes, etc,). 20 In routine clinical practice, this tool could be useful to monitor corneal transparency and its impact on visual acuity. However, it should be noted that there is no normative database either in the Pentacam HR software or ORA, so this study offers normality data for healthy children and for patients with PCG.…”

“…The mammalian cornea is optically clear, which is considered an essential aspect of highresolution vision. Its transparency is affected by various factors including some diseases and contact lens wear [11,44] . There are several reasons for the clarity of the cornea.…”

“…However, Dorota et al came to a different conclusion in patients with the pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX), which is characterized by the excessive production of granular amyloid-like protein fibers in the anterior segment ( Tomczyk-Socha et al, 2022 ). Increased COD was observed in the corneal epithelium in the PEX group, whereas it was not associated with endothelial cell density ( Urbaniak et al, 2018 ). This is possibly caused by the formation of a fibrous layer that is loosely attached to Descemet’s membrane in advanced stages of PEX, and it may increase the COD of the corneal endothelium.…”
