Schistosoma haematobium infection status and its associated risk factors among pregnant women in Munyenge, South West Region, Cameroon following scale-up of communal piped water sources from 2014 to 2017: a cross-sectional study

Abstract: Background In 2014, a study in Munyenge revealed a high prevalence of urogenital schistosomiasis (UGS) among pregnant women. This study investigated he prevalence and risk factors of UGS in pregnancy following scale-up of piped water sources from 2014 to 2017. Secondly, we compared stream usage, stream contact behaviour, infection rate and intensity with the findings of 2014. Methods Consenting pregnant women reporting for antenatal care (ANC) in the different health fa… Show more

“…The education level of the inhabitants was also strongly associated with the transmission of S. haematobium. Contrary to ndings by Wepnje et al [42] in Munyenge, Mount Cameroon Area, secondary level of education increased the odds of infection when compared to primary level of education. There is no distinct reason why individuals with secondary education had higher prevalence of infection.…”

“…Intense water contact activity and daily visitation to stream (degree II) was associated with increased risk and intensity of S. haematobium infection in THD. This con rms previous reports in other endemic foci in Cameroon [7,42,50] and elsewhere [51]. Water contact at any point in time is linked mostly to practices including domestic activities and bathing.…”

“…S.haematobium infection was shown to increase with age, this is in keeping with other studies done [42][43][44][45][46]. This is probably due to the fact that the older children do more activities in contaminated water like swimming and house chores unlike the younger PSAC who are only exposed during bathing.…”

“…Both areas have a temperature and average annual rainfall of 24-27 °C and 3126 mm, respectively. These localities are both characterized by a heterogenous population and intensive farming [25]. Mutengene is a semi-urban road-junction town with a highly heterogenous population located at 197 m (asl).…”
