Schistosomiasis, intestinal helminthiasis and nutritional status among preschool-aged children in sub-urban communities of Abeokuta, Southwest, Nigeria

Abstract: ObjectiveSchistosomiasis and intestinal helminthiasis are major public health problems with school-aged children considered the most at-risk group. Pre-school aged children (PSAC) are excluded from existing control programs because of limited evidence of infections burden among the group. We assessed the prevalence of infections and effect on nutritional status of preschool aged children in Abeokuta, Southwestern Nigeria.ResultsA community-based cross-sectional study involving 241 children aged 0–71 months was… Show more

“…More than half of the infected children in this sample had Ascaris lombricoides. Despite being reported as one of the commonest helminthes among children in sub-Sahara Africa [18,20], this parasite species is known to impair nutritional status [1] and has been found among other helminthes to be associated with malnutrition in children [21]. This emphasizes the importance of deworming interventions, especially controlling helminthiasis, as key part of malnutrition prevention among children.…”

“…Infants and preschoolers comprise about 10-20% of the 3.5 billion people living in malaria and intestinal parasite endemic areas, and the evidence on the prevalence of these infections among these groups and the infantile is emerging, with a lot of gap in Nigeria [13,22,23].…”

“…Ivermectin is not approved in children weighing < 15 kg; hence, this age group is excluded from official treatment programs. The drug has been widely used off‐label in a single‐dose administration for various indications, and given that young children may have high prevalence of helminth infections and scabies and serve as an important reservoir of Plasmodium , there is a need to build an evidence base to determine safe and effective ivermectin doses in the pediatric population. Ivermectin pharmacokinetics (PK) in adults has been described in a small number of healthy volunteers and patients with onchocerciasis, Trichuris trichiura infection, or malaria .…”
