School Governance and Academic Excellence: The Representations of Distinguished Students in an Annual Award of Excellence

Abstract: Within a research project on «academic excellence in the state school», this paper is a contribution to the sociological reflection on the cultural and organisational characteristics of the school and its relationship with the academic success of students. “…Elegeu-se como população-alvo o universo de alunos com desempenhos excelentes (classificações médias iguais e/ou superiores a 18 valores, numa escala de 0 a 20 valores), em contraponto com uma amostra representativa de alunos não excelentes (com desempenhos médios abaixo de 18 valores). A focagem empírica nos alunos considerados excelentes, em sistemático confronto com os alunos não excelentes (ou menos excelentes) que convivem no mesmo quotidiano escolar, permitiu elucidar o impacto dos fatores organizacionais e culturais (Palhares, 2014(Palhares, , 2015Torres & Palhares, 2015), bem como dos fatores não-escolares na construção da experiência académica (Palhares, 2014a) e na definição dos percursos de excelência deste grupo de jovens.
