Schwannoma of the larynx: case report

Abstract: Neurogenous tumours of the larynx are extremely uncommon. We present a rare case of schwannoma of the larynx. Clinical findings are presented together with computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance images. The tumour was located in the right aryepiglottic fold of the larynx. CT showed a well defined and hypodense mass extending from the right aryepiglottic fold to the right vocal cord. The patient underwent an excision of the mass through a lateral thyrotomy and the tumour was completely removed. The dia… Show more

“…1D). On microscopic evaluation, the tumour fulfilled Enzinger and Weiss's diagnostic criteria for schwannoma: (1) presence of a capsule, (2) presence of Antoni A and/or Antoni B areas, and (3) positivity of S-100 reaction 2 3 . Furthermore, Verocay bodies were visible and no interspersed axons were present.…”

“…On laryngoscopy, a laryngeal schwannoma appears like a submucosal mass. Paralysis or hypomobility of the ipsilateral vocal cord can be present 2 3 . The very slow growth (in the order of years), the absence of pathological lymphadenopathy and the lack of weight loss are characteristics indicating the benignity of this neurogenic tumour.…”

“…Most authors favor external approaches with alternative airway provisions such as a preliminary tracheotomy in larger tumors. Median or lateral thyrotomy or median or lateral pharyngotomy are recommended [1,[8][9][10][11][12]. In smaller tumors, endoscopic (laser-assisted) resection of the tumor can be a reasonable treatment option [1,13].…”

“…However, this method may not be suitable for every patient due to anatomical constraints and the requests of patients (15). There are a number of surgical methods that may be used, including trans-oral microlaryngoscopic excision, median thyrotomy and lateral pharyngotomy.…”
