Science and Technology Text Mining: Electric Power Sources

Abstract: Database Tomography (DT) is a textual database analysis system consisting of two major components: 1) algorithms for extracting multi-word phrase frequencies and phrase proximities (physical closeness of the multi-word technical phrases) from any type of large textual database, to augment 2) interpretative capabilities of the expert human analyst. DT was used to derive technical intelligence from a Power Sources database derived from the Science Citation Index (SCI). Phrase frequency analysis by the technical … Show more

“…It can be used to identify technical themes in large unstructured text databases [7][8][9][10][11][12]. Text mining can also be used to enhance information retrieval [13,14], to discuss potential discovery and innovation based on merging linkages between different working areas [15,16], to uncover unexpected asymmetries from the literature [17,18], to estimate global levels of effort in science and technology sub-disciplines [19][20][21], to help authors for increasing the citation of their works [3,19,20,22], and to track myriad research impacts across time and application areas. An agent based text mining approach was investigated on financial news to assist the investors in deciding to buy and sell stocks in Taiwan market [23].…”

“…Many fields have used also text mining to analyze technology trends; Kostoff et.al. (2004) analyzed multi-word phrase frequencies and phrase proximity to extract energy-related taxonomic structures [ 20 ]. Another study discussed the trend in the field of information security by creating a network of co-occurring words and focusing on clusters with network centralities [ 21 ].…”

“…As an example of the former, Kostoff et al analyzed multi-word phrase frequencies and phrase proximities, and extracted the taxonomic structure of energy research [7] [8]. In previous works, citationbased approaches, latter ones, were used to describe the network of energy-related journals using journal citation data [9] or journal classification data [10].…”
