Scientific Literature and Evaluation Metrics: Impact Factor, Usage Metrics, and Altmetrics

Abstract: Evaluating the quality of a scientific article has proven to be an elusive task. The most widely used bibliometric value currently used for this purpose, the journal impact factor, was not originally designed to determine the quality of research in a scientific article. Nevertheless, it has morphed into a surrogate to delineate the quality of a journal and even to represent the quality of individual articles in that that journal. Early 21 st century advances in computer technology have seen an explosive revolu… Show more

“…The three most important indicators of article quality evaluation include the impact factor (IF), H-index, and relative research interest (RRI), and these were the objects of our research. The impact factor (IF) was taken from the Journal Citation Reports (JCRs), which is recognised as a key indicator in evaluating articles ( Kavic and Satava, 2021 ). In general, the impact factor can directly reflect the quality and influence of an article.…”

“…However , scientific literature is scattered and costly to assess, creating a ubiquitous barrier to evidence-based health delivery. [3][4][5][6] Thus, moving science into action requires that evidence is available in a timely manner and has been synthesized and appraised according to well-established evidence-based principles.…”

“…There is also an element of subjectivity in choice of citation sources and database selection. 10 The dissemination of research and healthcare data through social media acts as a double-edged sword. 11 Although integration of social media and altmetrics into neurosurgery research brings great opportunities, however, there is a potential for misinformation and lack of standardization.…”
