Sclerosing haemangiomas of the lung

Abstract: A series of 29 pulmonary sclerosing haemangiomas is analysed. Included is one case with multiple tumours and another with metastatic growth in a hilar lymph node. Histochemical and electron microscopic studies show that type 2 pneumocytes are an important constituent cell type though bronchial structures, tumorlets and angiomas also occur within these tumours. They are considered to be pulmonary hamartomas formed from distal lung structures. They are of slow growth and have been confused in the past with pulmo… Show more

“…Although most of the PSH patient cases follow a benign clinical course, reportedly more than 10 PSH cases have presented with hilar, peribranchial and interlobar lymph node metastases [4,5]. In lymph node metastatic lesions, numerous polygonal cell sheets were observed but few [14] or no cuboidal cells were reported [2,4,6,15].…”

“…On histopathology, a well-defined capsulated lesion with endothelial-lined vascular spaces surrounded by concentrated cuboidal epithelioid cells and polygonal tumor cells was observed (fig. 3), and a diagnosis of pulmonary sclerosing hemangioma was established [1,2]. She had an uneventful postoperative course and a full recovery.…”

“…It generally is considered a benign epithelial neoplasm; however, multifocal and metastasizing neoplasms of SHs have been reported [13]. Because of its marked female predominance [14], interest has been raised regarding the expression of ERb and ERa in SH.…”
