Scoparone attenuates angiotensin II-induced extracellular matrix remodeling in cardiac fibroblasts

Abstract: Scoparone is a biologically active constituent isolated from Artemisia capillaris and possesses a variety of pharmacological activities, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-allergic and anti-cardiovascular activities. However, there are no studies focusing on the effects of scoparone against cardiac fibrosis. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of scoparone on Angiotensin II (Ang II)-induced extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling and its possible mechanism in cardiac fibrobla… Show more

“…15 SCO could inhibit Ang II-induced extracellular matrix remodelling in cardiac fibroblasts in vitro at least partly by inhibiting TGF-β1/Smad signalling. 16 SCO also showed a protective effect against ischaemia-reperfusion-induced myocardial injury by counteracting oxidative stress. 17 However, the effect of SCO on Ang II-induced myocardial hypertrophy is still unknown.…”

“…In the cardiovascular system, SCO was reported to be a potent hypotensive drug, with a probable mechanism of vascular dilatory action based on calcium mobilization regulation 15 . SCO could inhibit Ang II‐induced extracellular matrix remodelling in cardiac fibroblasts in vitro at least partly by inhibiting TGF‐β1/Smad signalling 16 . SCO also showed a protective effect against ischaemia‑reperfusion‑induced myocardial injury by counteracting oxidative stress 17 .…”

“…The treatment with 22 increased cell viability, superoxide dismutase levels, and B cell lymphoma 2 protein expression and decreased lactate dehydrogenase release, malondialdehyde production, creatine kinase levels, reactive oxygen species concentration, cell apoptotic rate, myocardial infarct area, and Bcl-2-associated X protein, and caspase-3 and cytochrome c protein expression. Effect of this compound against cardiac fibrosis was reported by Fu et al (2018), where the possible remedial effect of 22 on angiotensin II-induced extracellular matrix remodeling and its possible mechanism in cardiac fibroblasts was established.…”
