Polyvinyl alcohol‐based membranes for filtration of aqueous solutions: A comprehensive review

Abstract: This review provides a comprehensive overview on applications, preparation methods, and most notably the performance efficiency of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based membranes for filtration of aqueous environments. Incorporation of PVA into the membrane matrix significantly enhances such characteristics as antifouling and antibacterial properties as well as hydrophilicity and permeability in the water and wastewater filtrations. Contribution of different PVAbased modular membranes for water purification targets vi… Show more

“…It exhibits outstanding thermal, chemical, and mechanical properties. However, its properties strongly depend on the degree of hydroxylation [ 105 ]. Nevertheless, it can be solubilized in a quite broad range of solvents, making it suitable for the blending modification of numerous types of polymer membranes [ 104 , 105 , 106 ], although compatibility issues arise with highly hydrophobic polymers [ 107 ].…”

Yuan et al recently modified a PES membrane by blending different weight ratios (0–30 wt%) of PVA [ 106 ].…”

“…Despite the active use of PVA as a membrane material, its application is somewhat limited [ 27 ]. Due to the presence of a large number of hydroxyl groups (about 38%), PVA is unstable in aqueous solutions, which leads to low selectivity and high fluxes.…”

“…[8] Although it exhibits positive results, it causes some drawbacks such as (i) high expensive, (ii) difficult to synthesis, (iii) high fuel crossover, (iv) low glass transition temperature (T g ), (v) reduced proton conductivity at higher temperature, and so on, limited their use in PEMFCs. [9,10] This made the researchers to develop alternative PEM materials based on various non-fluorinated aromatic hydrocarbons such as sulfonated poly(ether sulfone) (SPES), [11,12] sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK), [13][14][15] sulfonated polystyrene (SPS), [16,17] polybenzimidazoles (PBI), [18,19] polyimides (PI), [20,21] poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), [22][23][24] sulfonated polystyrene ethylene butylene styrene (SPSEBS), [25,26] and so on. These membranes were extensively studied because of their good proton conductivity and considerable physicochemical and electrochemical properties.…”
