R&D, Socio‐Economic Conditions, and Regional Innovation in the U.S

Abstract: This paper looks at the genesis of innovation in the U.S. from a territorial perspective. The analysis aims to disentangle the impact of local research and development (R&D) expenditure from other contextual conditions supportive of the process of innovation. Particular emphasis is devoted to the role of socio-economic factors and systems of innovation (“social filter” conditions) and to their impact on the returns of R&D expenditure in different territorial contexts. The empirical analysis is based on a regio… Show more

“…Thus, as US studies have shown, although the core-periphery disadvantage may decrease, the peripheral and rural regions are still at a technological disadvantage where the geography of innovation is concerned (Ceh 2001;Monchuk & Miranowski 2010). Indeed, both the results obtained with European firm-level data and the observations made with US data, have confirmed that innovation activities are geographically concentrated and their impacts highly localised (Jaffe et al 1993;Audretsch & Feldman 1996;Sternberg & Arndt 2001;Crescenzi & Rodríguez-Pose 2013). In addition, regional concentration stimulates innovation, thus in general leaving the peripheral regions at a disadvantage on the levels of R&D and innovation activity (Tödtling & Trippl 2005).…”

“…The importance of socio‐economic elements for a region's capacity to create knowledge and take advantage from it is not characteristic of European regions alone. As Crescenzi and Rodríguez‐Pose () show in their paper, if one disentangles the impact of local R&D expenditure from other contextual conditions supportive of the process of knowledge creation, the results reveal the complexity of the territorial dynamics of innovation in the U.S. Local R&D investments are important predictors of regional innovative performance, and their impact is highly localized. However, social filter conditions are crucial for the productivity of innovation efforts.…”

“…He has also paid attention to the creative activities and the role of cities in the innovation processes (Lee & Rodríguez‐Pose, ). His article with Crescenzi on the US Regional Innovation is also a relevant contribution to the innovation processes and the socio‐economic conditions considering the case of the US (Crescenzi & Rodríguez‐Pose, . He had already published a seminal article on the territorial dynamics of innovation in Europe and the US (Crescenzi, Rodríguez‐Pose, & Storper, ).…”
