In 14 anesthetized and heparinized dogs, a tourniquet shock is induced by a 4 h lasting ligation of both hindlegs. Investigation of pulmonary artery pressure, cardiac output and platelet count reveals a narrowing of the pulmonary vascular bed. Immediately after release of the tourniquets, a decrease in platelet count occurs. When the platelet population is divided into an adhesive and nonadhesive fraction by a glass bead adhesion test, it can be demonstrated that changes in platelet count are mainly due to changes in the adhesive platelets.
