Screening of Plant Endophytes as Biological Control Agents against Root Rot Pathogens of Pepper (Capsicum annum L.)

Abstract: In this study, 16 endophytes previously isolated from flowering dogwood (Cornus florida) stem tissue without causing any external symptoms, were screened for bioactivity against different root rot pathogens, Fusarium solani, Fusarium oxysporum, Macrophomina phaseolina and three Phytophthora species. While most of the endophytes suppressed pathogen growth in dual culture and exhibited potential as biological control agents, one fungal endophyte A22F1, (Nigrospora sphaerica) was evaluated further in growth chamb… Show more

“…Therefore, it is essential for new antimicrobials to be developed. Endophytic fungi from MFH plants also produce a wide range of antimicrobial substances that deserve further research ( Gao et al, 2010 ; MT et al, 2018 ; Pavithra et al, 2020 ; Rajani et al, 2021 ; Zabalgogeazcoa, 2008 ).…”

“…The capability of antagonists to multiply within a short period of favorable environmental conditions before confronting plant pathogens is an important factor that increases their efficacy in the field. Also, Mmbaga et al (2018) claimed that plant inoculation with endophytes prior to the pathogens was more effective than introducing the pathogen before the endophytes.…”
