Screening the Personal Need for the Structure and solving word problems with fractions

Abstract: This paper presents the results of a pilot study of the impact of Personal Need for Structure of the selected mathematical competence. We were interested whether there is a relationship between cognitive-personal variable (Personal Need for Structure) and the mathematical knowledge about fractions of freshmen. We realized the experiment with 113 students of the Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra, Slovakia. We examined statistically significant dependencies between the cognitive-personality variabl… Show more

“…They may experience greater levels of emotional reactions to anomaly, such as those caused by COVID-19. Individuals who tend to maintain more complicated cognitive structures for building relations are likely to reduce uncertainty in crisis situations ( Svecova and Pavlovicova, 2016 ), which is associated with a greater ability to meet the needs of the new situation.…”

“…The Personal Need for Structure Scale (PNS; Thompson et al, 2001 ) is a 12-item survey (with four reverse-coded items) on a 6-point Likert scale ranging from one ( Strongly Disagree ) to six ( Strongly Agree ), which assesses the participant’s preference for predictability, consistency, and structure. The scale is comprised of two factors which include desire for structure and response to lack of structure ( Svecova and Pavlovicova, 2016 ).…”

“…Personal need for structure (PNS) Personal need for structure (PNS) was identified in two articles (Page & Mander, 2014;Roeske, 2013) as a need or preference for structure which appears to affect providers' responses/appraisals across multiple domains (Table 5). PNS is a theoretical construct suggesting that individuals can reduce uncertainty of a situation by having structure to mitigate uncertainty or ambiguity (Švecová & Pavlovičová, 2016). This PNS moderator was defined from literature highlighting individuals who perceived guidelines and protocols to be "correct" or the singular truth.…”
