Screening tools for body dysmorphic disorder in a cosmetic surgery setting

Abstract: The limited availability of good screening tools for BDD in patients seeking aesthetic surgery stands in remarkable contrast to the estimated high prevalence of BDD in this setting. Among the currently used screening tools, the BDDQ-DV and the DCQ seem the most suitable for further research on prevalence of BDD in cosmetic surgery and the impact of BDD on treatment outcome.

“…10,18 Similarly, there is an array of body image assessment tools. 19 Oosthuizen et al first constructed the Dysmorphic Concern Questionnaire in 1998, and it was originally developed to assess body image concern rather than being a tool to diagnose body dysmorphic disorder. 7 The questionnaire has been validated, achieving satisfactory internal consistency (Cronbach α = 0.88), and it has a strong correlation with impairment in various life domains and with the Beck Depression Inventory (r = 0.47).…”

“…Es perentorio ampliar los estudios existentes sobre la materia, particularmente en nuestra región, para poder caracterizar mejor a nuestra población consultante y diseñar estrategias rápidas de cribado, fáciles de implementar y costoefectivas (6). Algunos autores han propuesto instrumentos para conseguir este fin (13,45).…”

“…However, it requires a face-to-face interview by a trained interviewer, which is time-consuming. The fourth (the Dysmorphic Concern Questionnaire)15 and the fifth (the Body Dysmorphic Symptom Scale)16 ones also measure the physical appearance in a unidimensional manner only 17,18…”
