BackgroundOur objective was to study tongue lesions and their significance in psoriatic patients.MethodsThe oral mucosa was examined in 200 psoriatic patients presenting to Razi Hospital in Tehran, Iran, and 200 matched controls.ResultsFissured tongue (FT) and benign migratory glossitis (BMG) were the two most frequent findings. FT was seen more frequently in psoriatic patients (n = 66, 33%) than the control group (n = 19, 9.5%) [odds ratio (OR): 4.69; 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.61–8.52] (p-value < 0.0001). BMG, too, was significantly more frequent in psoriatic patients (28 cases, 14%) than the control group (12 cases, 6%) (OR: 2.55; 95% CI: 1.20–5.50) (p-value < 0.012). In 11 patients (5.5%), FT and BMG coexisted.FT was more frequent in pustular psoriasis (7 cases, 53.8%) than erythemato-squamous types (56 cases, 30.4%). On the other hand, the frequency of BMG increased with the severity of psoriasis in plaque-type psoriasis assessed by psoriasis area and severity index (PASI) score.ConclusionsNonspecific tongue lesions are frequently observed in psoriasis. Further studies are recommended to substantiate the clinical significance of these seemingly nonspecific findings in suspected psoriatic cases.

“…Many risk factors have been proposed for GT: hormonal disturbances and oral contraceptive use (Waltimo, 1991); psychological findings (Redman et al , 1965); diabetes mellitus (Wysocki and Daley, 1987) – although Guggenheimer et al (2000) found no difference; allergic conditions such as atopy (Marks and Simons, 1979) hay fever and rhinitis (Marks and Czarny, 1984); dermatological diseases such as pustular psoriasis (Wysocki and Daley, 1987); seborrheic dermatitis (Rahminoff and Muhsam, 1957), pityriasis pilaris (Wysocki and Daley, 1987); and Reiter's Syndrome (O'Keefe et al , 1973; Weathers et al , 1974; Pogrel and Cram, 1988). Oral mukozal lezyonlar (OML) bazen tanımlanamamış bir hastalığa doğru tanı koymada yol gösteren tek ipucu olabilir. Türkiye'de OML üzerine yürütülmüş oldukça az sayıda çalışma mevcuttur. Biz de bu çalışma ile genel Türk toplumunda OML'nin prevalansını ve bunu etkileyen faktörleri ortaya koymayı hedefledik. G Ge er re eç ç v ve e Y Yö ön nt te em ml le er r: : Bin altı yüz yetmiş hasta (950 kadın, 720 erkek) bu çalışma kapsamında incelendi. Hastaların yaş, eşlik eden hastalıklar, ilaç hikayesi, sigara ve alkol kullanımı, dolgu, kaplama ve protez gibi dental muayene bulguları, dermatolojik hastalıkları ve mevcutsa OML'ı kaydedildi ve ayrıntılı istatistiksel analizler yapıldı. B Bu ul lg gu ul la ar r: : OML'nin genel prevalansı %37,8 idi (kadın=%34,8, erkek=%41,6). Paslı dil en sık karşılaşılan OML idi (%6,7), bunu fissüre dil (%4,4) ve Fordyce granülleri (%3,9) izlemekteydi. Paslı dil erkekler, orta yaşlı erişkinler (35-54 yıl) ve 20-39 sigara/gün sıklığında sigara içenlerde istatistiksel olarak anlamlı oranda daha fazla tespit edildi. Alkol kullanımı ile OML görülme sıklığı arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı kabul edilebilecek herhangi bir ilişki saptanmadı. Venöz göllenme, protez stomatiti ve glossit ileri yaş (65 yıl ve üzeri) ile istatistiksel anlamda ilişkili bulundu. Bu çalışma grubunda kandidiyazis ve Behçet hastalığı erkeklerde, glossit ise kadınlarda istatistiksel olarak anlamlı oranda daha yüksek tespit edildi.
