Tongue lesions in psoriasis: a controlled study

Abstract: BackgroundOur objective was to study tongue lesions and their significance in psoriatic patients.MethodsThe oral mucosa was examined in 200 psoriatic patients presenting to Razi Hospital in Tehran, Iran, and 200 matched controls.ResultsFissured tongue (FT) and benign migratory glossitis (BMG) were the two most frequent findings. FT was seen more frequently in psoriatic patients (n = 66, 33%) than the control group (n = 19, 9.5%) [odds ratio (OR): 4.69; 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.61–8.52] (p-value < 0.0001… Show more

“…A single score is calculated and ranges between 0 (no disease) to 72 (maximal disease). In a study, frequency of geographic tongue increased with the severity of psoriasis in plaque-type psoriasis assessed by PASI score [11]. Moreover, one of our patients came with exacerbated disease (case 1) and other patient is maintenance phase patient (case 2).…”

“…Other authors (19) have suggested that geographic tongue is a transient expression of psoriasis while fissured tongue is a late and permanent sign. In recent studies, Daneshpazhooh and collaborators (20) showed that fissured tongue was seen in 33% of patients with psoriasis and geographic tongue in 14%. This author observed various cases of fissured tongue in psoriasis vulgaris (30.4%) but his study also demonstrated a higher frequency of fissured tongue (53.8%) in generalized pustular forms.…”

“…Although psoriasis is a relatively common chronic skin disease (affects 2-3 % of the US population) [6], we think psoriasis in association with the MRS is not coincidental. Plicated tongue, which is believed to be a physiological variant (incidence is estimated about 10-15 % of normal population) [4] -is at the same time a part of the classic MRS triad and is more frequent in psoriatic patients [7]. Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome is a rare disorder and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of labial swelling and facial palsy.…”
