Sealing Ability of Mineral Trioxide Aggregate, Calcium Phosphate Cement, and Glass Ionomer Cement in the Repair of Furcation Perforations

Abstract: The present study indicated that GIC had the greatest dye penetration followed by CPC and MTA. Mineral trioxide aggregate and calcium phosphate cement had comparatively better sealing ability than glass ionomer cement.

“…Non‐surgical treatment is considered the best option, as surgical repair can be impaired by difficult or even impossible accessibility and can lead to formation of chronic pocketing by excessive removal of alveolar bone . However, non‐surgical treatment is not exempt from complications, such as material extrusion into the periodontal space .…”

“…Thus, to achieve the best result, new repair materials must be biocompatible, show good sealing ability, stimulate new bone mineralisation and extrusion should be preventable (). As no repair material fulfils all these requirements, many researchers have tried to determine the best and safest alternative from within the currently available options, thereby justifying the number of studies focusing on repair materials.…”

“…So much the better, if the hard-setting cement placed over the capping and beneath SSC has the inherent quality that reduces microleakage over the time. Nowadays, there are some materials such as MTA which can provide excellent seal (5)(6)(7). However, due to extra expense, it isn't a routine pulp dressing material in primary teeth.…”
