Searching for Sex Trafficking Victims: Using a Novel Link-Tracing Method Among Commercial Sex Workers in Muzaffarpur, India

Abstract: Estimating the prevalence of sex trafficking requires a practical sampling strategy to reach the hidden population. In this study, we experimented with a network sampling design to obtain a sample of sex workers from the city of Muzaffarpur, India. Backed by census data and other auxiliary information, we obtained a stratified initial sample of 111 individuals and with two waves of referrals arrived at a final sample of 317 individuals. A sophisticated network-based approach is used to estimate the population … Show more

“…Using large samples better to understand different trafficking types has considerable potential for informing the design, delivery and prioritisation of interventions. Primary research, which is often under-funded, has much to offer here (see [82]). Yet, there is also considerable scope to optimise data already collected by official agencies, NGOs and others [19].…”

“…Recent innovations have resulted in a novel approach known as Vincent Link Tracing Sampling (VLTS), 41,42 which uses a traditional RDS recruitment process with a conventional sampling design, such as simple random sampling. Unlike RDS, VLTS uses a generously sized representative initial sample and only a few waves of sampling, so that it samples wide rather than deep to maximize the number of entry points.…”

“…22 Using methods commonly employed by public health researchers to estimate hidden populations, such as injection drug users and people living with HIV/AIDS, has been suggested as a way to produce more reliable estimates of the size and scope of human trafficking. 23 Studies have generated localized or national estimates of trafficked people that relied on such methods; for example, snowball sampling, 24 respondent-driven sampling, 25 and multiple systems estimation. 26…”
