Resumen.-Se analiza la variabilidad estacional de los ensambles de larvas de peces en relación con las con diciones hidrográficas, durante 4 cruceros en la región norte del Golfo de California (GC). De acuerdo a las propiedades termohalinas y fauna asociada se identificaron 2 periodos: un periodo frío, cuando la temperatura disminuye y la corriente costera fluye en dirección al ecuador en invierno y primavera (circulación anticiclónica), dominado por especies de afinidad templada y subtropical (e.g., Engraulis mordax y Merluccius productus); y un periodo cálido, caracterizado por la intrusión de agua tropical superficial en verano y otoño (circulación ciclónica), con alta diversidad de especies de a finidad subtropicaltropical (e.g., Benthosema panamense y Anchoa spp.). La variabilidad estacional se identifica como el elemento principal en la estructuración de los ensambles de larvas de peces. Sin embargo, la hidrodinámica incide en lo s patrones de agregación y el predominio de la biota pelágico costera, demersal y mesopelágica a lo largo del año.Palabras clave: Larvas de peces, masas de agua, hidrografía, Golfo de California Abstract.-This paper analyzes the seasonal variability on larval fish assemblage structure and the relationships to hydrographic conditions during 4 seasonal surveys in the northern Gulf of California. Two periods were identified according to thermohaline properties and associated fauna: a cold period, when temperature drops and the coastal current flows equatorward in winter and spring (anticyclonic circulation), dominated by species of temperate and subtropical affinity (e.g., Engraulis mordax and Merluccius productus); and a warm period, characterized by poleward intrusion of Tropical Surface Water in summer and autumn (cyclonic circulation), with a high diversity of tropical-subtropical species (e.g., Benthosema panamense and Anchoa spp.). Cluster analysis defined 2 groups of stations and associated taxa: a Northern Group, located in the Delfín Basin, including mainly demersal taxa; and a Mainland-Insular group, of species with various affinities (demersal, coastal-pelagic, mesopelagic). Seasonal variability is identified as the main element in the structuring of larval fish assemblages. However, hydrodynamic changes influence the aggregation patterns and the prevalence of the coastal pelagic, demersal and mesopelagic biota throughout the year.

Summary: Connectivity studies in the Gulf of California are an important tool for improving the use and management of the gulf's natural resources. The goal of this work was to study the three-dimensional connectivity in the northern Gulf of California during two representative months of summer when most local marine species spawn. Passive particles were advected for eight weeks in a three-dimensional current field generated by a three-dimensional baroclinic numerical model. The results indicate that the locations of greatest particle retention were the Upper Gulf and the Seasonal Eddy. The Seasonal Eddy corresponded to the area of largest particle catchment because the continental coastal current carries most particles released in the Midriff Archipelago region; subsequently these particles were entrained in the seasonal cyclonic eddy, causing most of them to remain within it. We conclude that the continental coastal current and the Seasonal Eddy control the connectivity patterns in the northern Gulf of California.Keywords: connectivity; northern Gulf of California; summer; HAMSOM; retention; continental coastal current; Seasonal Eddy. Conectividad tridimensional durante el verano en el norte del Golfo de CaliforniaResumen: Los estudios de conectividad en el Golfo de California (GC) son una herramienta importante para mejorar el uso y la gestión de los recursos naturales del golfo. El objetivo de este trabajo fue estudiar la conectividad tridimensional en el norte del Golfo de California (NGC) durante dos meses representativos de verano, ya que es la temporada con mayor desove de especies marinas. Se advectaron partículas pasivas durante ocho semanas en un campo de corrientes tridimensional generado por un modelo numérico baroclínico tridimensional. Los resultados indicaron que los lugares con mayor retención de las partículas fueron el Alto Golfo (UG) y el Remolino Estacional (SE). A su vez, SE fue el área de máxima captación de partículas debido a que la corriente costera continental transporta la mayoría de las partículas liberadas en las localidades ubicadas en la zona de las Grandes Islas, posteriormente estas partículas son atrapadas por el remolino ciclónico estacional lo que provocó que la mayoría de las partículas liberadas se queden dentro de éste. Por último, concluimos que la corriente costera continental y el remolino estacional controlan los patrones de conectividad en el NGC.Palabras clave: conectividad; norte del Golfo de California; verano; HAMSOM; retención; corriente costera continental; remolino estacional.

Surface circulation in the Gulf of California in summer from surface drifters and satellite images (2004–2006)

Surface drifters released in the Gulf of California between June 2004 and August 2006 are used to describe the surface circulation in late spring and summer. In the June to September mean, there was a poleward coastal current on the shelf and slope of the mainland side of the Gulf, with mean speed 0.3 m/s; it reached the northern Gulf and joined the cyclonic circulation typical of this zone in summer. In the western half of the southern Gulf, the drifters presented recirculating currents that are due to mesoscale eddies that appear to dominate the surface circulation in summer. In June 2004, the coastal current presented an enhancement event with mean speed around 0.60 m/s and maximum 0.80 m/s. It took 20 days for a particular drifter to travel the 1000 km from the Gulf entrance to the head. This strengthening of the coastal current was apparent in chlorophyll a and SST satellite images, the drifters following closely the intrusion of warm, chlorophyll-poor surface water from outside the Gulf. The drifters and the satellite images suggest that the current-enhancement event lasted less than a month. This mesoscale event was linked with a mesoscale remote forcing in the tropical Pacific coast and with a mesoscale local forcing of the wind. These events seem to occur every year, and are probably important in carrying organisms and properties from the entrance to the whole length of the Gulf.
