-This study analyzed seasonal variations in the testes, the concentration of sex hormones, the parameters of fresh and thawed semen, and the sexual behavior of male Alpine goats from a temperate region in a tropical climate and possible interference with fertility. The maximum and minimum temperature and luminosity were recorded daily, while seminal, hormonal, and behavioral assessments were carried out every fortnight. The maximum and minimum temperature (°C) and luminosity (h) were recorded daily always at 17.00 h. The scrotal circumference (cm), testicular volume (mL), volume (mL), appearance (creamy, milky, aqueous) and coloration (white, white-yellowish, and yellowish) seminal, turbulence or mass movement (0 to 5), progressive spermatic motility (0 to 100%), spermatic force (0 to 5), concentration (spermatozoids/mL), spermatic pathologies, hypoosmotic test (%), serum levels of FSH (mUI/mL), LH (mUI/mL), testosterone (ng/mL), and sexual behaviors were carried out every fortnight. There was a difference between the scrotal circumference evaluated monthly, testicular volume, volume and concentration of fresh semen, sperm vigor of the thawed semen, serum levels of testosterone, FSH and LH, and some sexual behaviors. Thus, the changes that occur in the quantity and quality of sperm, in the hormonal profile, and in sexual behaviors should not be regarded as an impediment to the use of male Alpine goats in tropical climates throughout the year. These variations do not lead to changes in the semen that may compromise the fertility of these animals.

INTISARIPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui korelasi lingkar skrotum dengan bobot badan, volume semen, kualitas semen, dan kadar testosteron pada kambing Kejobong muda dan dewasa. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada bulan Maret-Mei 2013 di Purbalingga, Semarang, dan Yogyakarta. Materi yang digunakan adalah 35 ekor kambing Kejobong jantan, terbagi atas 2 kelompok umur, yaitu muda 20 ekor (8-12 bulan) dan dewasa 15 ekor (13-24 bulan). Variabelvariabel yang diamati meliputi korelasi antar lingkar skrotum dengan bobot badan, volume semen, abnormalitas, konsentrasi, morfologi, spermatozoa hidup, dan kadar testosteron. Kadar testosteron dianalisis menggunakan metode Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat korelasi positif antara lingkar skrotum dengan bobot badan pada kambing Kejobong muda sebesar r = 0,60 (P<0,05) dengan persamaan regresi Y = -50,856 + 3,666X, namun tidak ada korelasi pada kambing Kejobong dewasa. Lingkar skrotum tidak berkorelasi dengan volume, motilitas, konsentrasi, morfologi, dan spermatozoa hidup pada kambing Kejobong muda dan dewasa. Lingkar skrotum berkorelasi negatif dengan kadar testosteron pada kambing Kejobong muda sebesar r = -0,66 (P<0,05) dengan persamaan regresi Y = 14,353 -0,436X, namun tidak ada korelasi pada kambing Kejobong dewasa. Hasil penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa lingkar skrotum berkorelasi positif dengan bobot badan dan berkorelasi negatif dengan kadar testosteron pada kambing Kejobong muda. Lingkar skrotum tidak berkorelasi dengan volume dan kualitas semen baik pada kambing Kejobong muda maupun dewasa.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of melatonin implantation on basic testicular characteristics and reproductive performance of Kivircik and Charollais rams and ewes during the nonbreeding season. In this study, 8 Kivircik and 6 Charollais rams were used. Rams were implanted with 54 mg melatonin according to the manufacturer's instructions. At melatonin implantation and at ram introduction the reproductive performance and testicular characteristics were evaluated. Throughout the experimental period, rams were permanently kept outdoors under conditions of natural day length and at ambient temperature. The effects of exogenous melatonin treatments on the reproductive performances of rams and ewes, estrus response, pregnancy rate, litter size and twinning rate of ewes were evaluated in all groups. Libido values were significantly higher in Charollais rams compared to Kivircik rams (P<0.001). Testicular volume (TV) was increased in both ram breeds. Scrotal length (SL) was also increased in both Kivircik and Charollais rams (P<0.01). In conclusion, we showed that the treatment of rams with slow release melatonin implants increased scrotal diameters and testicular volumes in both Kivircik and Charollais rams.
