Seasonal diet shifts of seven fish species in an Atlantic rainforest stream in Southeastern Brazil

Abstract: We analyzed the stomach contents of 116 individuals belonging to seven fishes species in order to investigate seasonal changes in feeding strategy and how trophic interactions between species affect community structure in an Atlantic rainforest stream in Southeastern Brazil. Oligosarcus hepsetus and Pimelodus sp. consumed fewer items during the winter. Phalloceros caudimaculatus switched feeding habits from detritus during summer to algae during winter. These examples are related to variations in food availabi… Show more

“…Invertivorous species composed the dominant guild of this assemblage. This result is in agreement with the ones already obtained for other tropical (Angermeier and Karr 1983;Bojsen and Barriga 2002;Silva 1993;Uieda et al 1997;Deus and Petrere-Junior 2003;Pouilly et al 2006;Ibanez et al 2007) and temperate forested streams (Schlosser 1982;Rahel and Hubert 1991;Oberdorff et al 1993Oberdorff et al , 2002 suggesting a possible convergence in trophic structure between temperate and tropical fish assemblages ). Trophic diversity of fish assemblages in such systems may be strongly related to food availability (Angermeier and Karr 1983), which in turn may be influenced by common environmental constraints.…”

“…Based on the water usage by local riverine inhabitants, both -JUNIOR (2003) suggest that during the rainy season in tropical regions, fishes tend to be more generalists due to the increase in the variety of available items and also to the reduction of visibility which reduces their capacity to detect their usual prey. According to WILLIAMS et al (2003), some fish species show feeding preferences for special benthic organisms, independent of their abundance and presence in the sediment.…”
