SummaryDecandrinin (1), an unprecedented C9-spiro-fused 7,8-seco-ent-abietane, was obtained from the bark of an Indian mangrove, Ceriops decandra, collected in the estuary of Godavari, Andhra Pradesh. The constitution and the relative configuration of 1 were determined by HRMS (ESI) and extensive NMR investigations, and the absolute configuration by circular dichroism (CD) and optical-rotatory dispersion (ORD) spectroscopy in combination with quantum-chemical calculations. Decandrinin is the first 7,8-seco-ent-abietane.

Plectranthus barbatus is largely used in the Northeast region of Brazil by the local population for treatment of digestive problems as substitute of boldo (Pneumus boldus). Phytochemical analysis of the leaf extracts of Plectranthus barbatus (Labiatae) cultivated in this region yielded two abietane diterpenoids, cyclobubatusin (1) and barbatusin (2) and a new one named 7β-acetyl-12-deacetoxycyclobutatusin (3). The structures of the isolated compounds were established by spectral analysis, using mainly mass spectra and 1 H and 13 CNMR (1D and 2D). These procedures permitted the assignment of all chemical shifts in the diterpenoids.Keywords: Plectranthus barbatus; Labiatae; abietane diterpenoids. INTRODUÇÃOO gênero Plectranthus (sin. Coleus) pertencente à família Labiatae (sin. Lamiaceae) envolve cerca de 300 espécies, com ocorrência natural na África, Ásia e Austrália 1,2 . Plectranthus barbatus é uma erva ou subarbusto com folhas pencioladas, elípticas e aveludadas 3 , popularmente conhecida como malva santa, boldo nacional ou boldo falso. O interesse pelo estudo fitoquímico da espécie Plectranthus barbatus foi estimulado pelo amplo uso popular das folhas para tratamento de problemas digestivos 4,5 em substituição ao boldo do Chile. Neste trabalho, relata-se o isolamento e elucidação estrutural de três diterpenos do tipo abietano, da espécie Plectranthus barbatus (Coleus barbatus) Andr, cultivada no Horto de Plantas Medicinais Prof. Francisco José de Abreu Matos, da Universidade Federal do Ceará (HPMFJAM/UFC) -ciclobutatusina (1), barbatusina (2) e 7β-acetil-12-desacetoxiciclobutatusina (3), este inédito na literatura. Plectranthus (Lamiaceae), which—according to the latest systematic revision—includes three separate genera (Coleus, Plectranthus sensu stricto, and Equilabium), is a genus widely used in traditional medicine—mainly in the treatment of various ailments of the digestive tract, respiratory tract, and skin. Many species of Plectranthus s.l. have been shown to produce phenolic compounds and terpenes. Diterpenes, especially those of the abietane class, are the most studied group of secondary metabolites found in Plectranthus s.l., which is characterized by a significant structural diversity arising from the oxygenation and further rearrangement of the basic tricyclic abietane skeleton to a complete aromatization of the ring system. This review summarizes the known information on abietane diterpenes, showing their structures, sources, and biosynthesis. A classification of these compounds into nine groups, according to the arrangement of their ring C, is used. Royleanones, spirocoleons, and hydroquinones are the largest classes of abietane diterpenes, covering more than 70% of all the compounds reviewed.
