Secondhand smoke exposure among never-smoking adolescents in Wuhan, China

Abstract: Without smoke-free legislation in Wuhan, China, we investigated secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure at home, school, and public places for never-smoking school-going adolescents in 2019. A cross-sectional study was carried out within the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) framework. Weighted univariate, bivariate and multivariable analyses were conducted. “…Previous work has also confirmed the existence of serious SHS exposure among Chinese adolescents. For instance, Mei and colleagues analysed data from 5632 non‐smoking adolescents in China, and found that the prevalence of SHS exposure among adolescents in public places was 48.9% (Mei et al, 2022). Another study of 3575 Chinese high school students found that the prevalence of SHS exposure was 69.2% (Chen et al, 2018).…”

More than 300 million people in China are tobacco users, and every year 100000 non-smokers die from secondhand smoke 2 . The harm of secondhand smoke is not less than that of direct smoking.…”

“…Exposure to SHS, however, is also reflected in an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases [ 8 ] and malignant processes in other body systems [ 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ], although the exact impact of SHS on all body systems remains unclear. Recent smoke-free policies have reduced the burden of SHS, mostly in public places, but a significant portion of the global population remains in health-threatening exposure to SHS [ 5 , 13 ].…”
