Gasfroenf. 3,[23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35] 1967. The N-Carbobenzyloxy(=Cbo)-C-terminal tetrapeptide sequence of gastrin has been synthesized, and this ferrugasfrin has been compared with histamine with respect to acid and intrinsic factor secretion. Fiftytwo patients with various gastric disorders were examined, and both stimulants were given as subcutaneous injections. Tetragastrin in doses of 5 to 10 pg/kg elicits a gastric acid secretion of the same pattern and magnitude as is found after histamine, 40 pg/kg. This review apprises the reader of recent advances in cobalamin absorption and transport since 1970. This field has been of interest to gastroenterologists, hematologists, and biochemists as well as nutritionists. Clinical conditions leading to cobalamin deficiency present especially to the first two of these specialties. Many recent advances involve biochemical definition of the specific transport proteins themselves. Full understanding of the multiple clinical conditions associated with cobalamin deficiency requires some knowledge of these proteins. We do not discuss every paper in the field, especially the early literature (see 47, 61, 150). Despite rapid strides in understanding the mechanism of absorption and transport of cobalamin both in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, the complete sequence of events during cellular absorption at the plasma membrane level and events in the cells that mediate intracellular movement of cobalamin have not been elucidated completely. Here we emphasize the current state of knowledge about cobalamin absorption and transport in man and other mammalian systems, particularly the physiological role and biochemical nature of proteins involved (intrinsic factor, intrinsic factor-cobalamin receptor, transcobalamins).

“…Hoedemaeker et al (1964) have produced evidence from immunological and autoradiographic studies that the site of secretion is the parietal cell, and this view is supported by the close correlation between amounts of acid and intrinsic factor secreted (Ardeman, 1965;Irvine, 1965;R0dbro, et al, 1965). The pattern of acid and that of intrinsic factor secretion differ, however, the difference being most obvious on continued histamine stimulation when the output of acid remains high and that of intrinsic factor falls off rapidly after an initial rise (Irvine, 1966 ;Lawrie and Anderson, 1967). Renal Function after Leptospirosis-Simpson et al. MEDICAL JOURNAL 473 instances six, serotypes. In only two were the maximum titres against the serotypes responsible for the original infection. DiscussionOur results suggest that the long-term prognosis after the acute renal lesion of leptospirosis is good. Thus in the British patients all the results of renal function tests were normal except for a slightly reduced creatinine clearance in one man; as the serum creatinine level and other results in him were normal the significance of this isolated finding is doubtful. Another man developed hypertension, but renal damage did not appear to be the cause. One group of Gurkha patients had normal creatinine clearances but all did not concentrate urine adequately, while in the others these findings were reversed; since each abnormality was confined to one group it seems likely that these discrepancies reflect incomplete dehydration and incomplete urine collection respectively.As intravenous pyelograms were performed in only four patients, and renal biopsy in none, we
