“…Mean annual sediment yield can be calculated from the total volume of sediment retained behind check dams, as done by McManus and Duck (1985), Van den Wall Blake (1986), Neil and Mazari (1993), Foster and Walling (1994), White et al (1996), Romero-Díaz et al (2007), Boix-Fayos et al (2008), Sougnez et al (2011) and Bellin et al (2011). Other authors also used this total volume to calibrate or validate mathematical models (e.g.…”

“…This large number of small reservoirs in the world is a high potential source of information for sediment yield assessment and modelling. Some examples of sediment yield studies based on sedimentation volumes in small reservoirs include McManus and Duck (1985), Van den Wall Blake (1986), Neil and Mazari (1993), Foster and Walling (1994), White et al (1996), Romero-Díaz et al (2007), Boix-Fayos et al (2008), Sougnez et al (2011) and Bellin et al (2011). Verstraeten and Poesen (2002) calculated the error on sediment yield estimation for 21 catchments located in central Belgium using small reservoir deposits and concluded that this is a suitable methodology for medium-sized catchments (10 1 -10 4 km 2 ) and for midterm sediment yield estimations (10 0 -10 2 yr).…”

“…It was found that ANN model results are better than conventional empirical methods but inferior to GP. Various investigators (Neil and Mazari 1993;Verstraeten and Poesen 1999) have concluded that sediment trap efficiency is an important parameter to assess sediment yield when sediment deposits in reservoirs. If trap-efficiency is not accounted for in such studies, sediment yield will be underestimated.…”

“…Sediment yield however can be monitored by using measuring sediment deposition rates in lakes, reservoirs or small ponds (e.g. Van den Wall Bake, 1986;Neil and Mazari, 1993;McManus and Duck, 1985;Foster, 1995;White et al, 1996;Verstreaten andPoesen, 1999, 2001c). In many of this reservoir, sediment deposition can be observed.…”
