Evidence of the AD 1755 tsunami consisting of the same type of accretions produced by the re-deposition of earlier sediments, has been recorded at three different height along the coast of Gibraltar: Along a shallow sandy shore, the tsunami wave reached a run-up of 2-3 m, whereas along steep, cliff-lined shores (Rosia Bay) it surpassed 5 m. An overwash deposit was also identified at the bottom of a lagoon (The Inundation), at 0.5 m b.s.l., on the isthmus that joins the Rock with the mainland. Southern submerged platforms (Vladi's Reef) were also affected by the erosional backwash to a depth of 22 m. The tsunamigenic sediments exhibit a bimodal granulometry, mainly composed of sands with a coarser fraction composed of marine faunal shells remains, together with larger clasts derived from the rocky substrate. ResumenEl estudio de los eventos costeros en el pasado es importante para conocer el alcance y los períodos de recurrencia de los mismos, así como su papel de acumulación de la secuencia sedimentaria en el litoral. En este aspecto, la interpretación paleoambiental se basa generalmente en los depósitos de sedimentación "normal" (más lenta y continua), desechando por lo general el análisis de los eventos catastróficos debidos a su escasa frecuencia a una escala humana. Estos fenómenos "catastróficos", incluyendo temporales, huracanes y tsunamis, que logran producir una notable modificación del paisaje costero, afectando intensamente a las instalaciones humanas y constituyendo un riesgo natural de primera magnitud, constituyen el centro de atención del presente artículo.Palabras clave: Costa atlántica, eventos catastróficos, registro geológico, Terremoto de Lisboa 1755, tsunami, registro Golfo de Cádiz. AbstractThe study of the coastal events in the past is important to know their scope and their recurrence periods, as well as its role in the accumulation of the sedimentary sequence in the littoral. In this aspect, the paleoenvironmental interpretation is generally based on the deposits of "normal" sedimentation (slower and continue), rejecting in general the analysis of the catastrophic events due to its scanty frequency to a human scale. These "catastrophic" phenomena, including sea storms, hurricanes, and tsunamis, which manage to produce a notable modification of the coastal landscape, affecting intensely the human facilities and constituting a natural risk of the first magnitude, constitute the centre of attention of the present article.

“…In the past two decades, the tsunamiinduced topography changes and the sediment deposition (tsunami deposits), which result from tsunami-induced sediment transport, have become a matter of interest to many geologists and engineers because they are related to tsunami risks (e.g., Dawson and Shi, 2000;Moore et al, 2006;Dawson and Stewart, 2007). A large tsunami transports seabed sediment over large areas and creates deposition of continuous and discontinuous sediment sheets across large areas of the coastal zone (e.g., Hindson et al, 1996;Dawson and Shi, 2000). Thus, tsunami deposits are of geological interest as evidence for the occurrence of past tsunamis and for estimating past tsunami inundation areas.…”

Three-dimensional sediment transport processes on tsunami-induced topography changes in a harbor

A three-dimensional hydrostatic numerical simulation on tsunami-induced topography changes near a harbor is carried out, and sediment transport processes on a significant local deposition near the center of the harbor caused by a tsunami, which was observed in an early experimental study, are investigated. This local deposition has not been well predicted by a vertically averaged hydrodynamic model. The results show that velocities, water levels and topography changes in the harbor predicted in this study agree with the experimental data. The local deposition has relations with a vortex generated in the harbor when the tsunami attacks the harbor. At areas near the vortex center, a secondary flow of the first kind develops, and it plays the role of transporting suspended sediment to the vortex center, located near the center of the harbor, and causes the local deposition there. In order to predict deposition areas with high accuracy, the secondary flow effects should be incorporated in prediction methods of tsunami-induced topography change.
