Seed dormancy release of Halenia elliptica in response to stratification temperature, duration and soil moisture content

Abstract: Background: Although the effect of cold stratification on seed dormancy release has been extensively studied for many species, knowledge of the role of stratifying temperature, soil moisture content and duration of stratification on seed dormancy release at the population level is limited. Here, we aimed to determine the response of seed dormancy release to these factors in six populations of Halenia elliptica. Results: Seed dormancy release was more responsive to low than high temperatures, and no dormancy br… Show more

“…Seed dormancy is the result of natural evolution of plants in response to adverse environments, but it is not conducive to agricultural production for human beings ( Agrawal et al, 2021 ). Seed dormancy is regulated by temperature, light, hormones and other factors, and affects mRNA splicing, translation and chromatin remodeling ( Chen D. L. et al, 2020 ; Tognacca and Botto, 2021 ). P. cyrtonema seeds began to enter the epicotyl dormancy after the bulb appeared.…”

“…For example, covering the seeds under the litter to ensure effective stratification in winter will facilitate seed germination. On the other hand, collecting seeds to artificially release seed dormancy can prevent animal foraging (Chen et al, 2020). Furthermore, the reintroduction of C. migao seedlings into wild population should be considered an effective method to increase the population of this arbor (Wright et al, 2009).…”

“…Abscisic acid has been linked to seed dormancy induction and Horticulturae 2021, 7, 490 2 of 12 maintenance, whereas GA is linked to dormancy breaking and germination [10,11]. In addition, cold stratification (CS) is an important environmental element that alleviates seed dormancy [12,13]. Depending on the species, the effective temperature for seed dormancy release during CS ranges from 0 to 10 • C [13][14][15].…”
